Sin and Gardening

Luke 8:16-17
“No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light. For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and come to light.

Think about it for a second… why would Jesus talk about hiding a light, and then talk about sin being exposed?

I want to talk to you a little about sin, and gardening.

About two months ago, I pulled up all of the weeds at our condo complex, and covered the mulch pits with fresh mulch.

I didn’t know how much mulch to use, so I put about an inch of mulch over the mulch beds.

A friend of mine told me one time, “make sure you put a LOT of mulch down when you mulch these, otherwise the weeds will come back in a few weeks.”

And sure enough, I did not put enough on; the weeds were back in FULL force, they were actually worse than before!

So yesterday, I put as much mulch as I used on 8 mulch beds on 2!

I didn’t put enough on the first time, and I was NOT going to make that mistake again.

I pulled the weeds up by the roots, again, and covered the mulch beds with a LOT of mulch.

This way, a few weeds will show up here and there, but they will be easily manageable, because I took care of it the right way…

Doesn’t this sound like something else to you?

Who has ever sinned before, and repeated the same sin?

You wanted to stop sinning, you thought you had it under control, only to find out a short while later, your sin was back, bigger than ever.

Guys think they will stop masturbating if they get married, and they don’t, it gets worse.

Girls think they will stop flirting and sleeping around if they get married, and they don’t, it gets worse.

Many times, many of us think something like, “IF I just do this or that, I will be ok,” but that is not what the Bible says.

We think that we can control something enough that no one will find out.

We think there is a condition that we have, and the cure to our condition, is to add a little something to it, like the little bit of mulch I added, but it doesn’t work.

Maybe we will add a little bit of Jesus, and He will help us.

We pray to Him and ask Him to help us, but we don’t mean it, we just want forgiveness for the sin without the intension of stopping.

We won’t give the whole thing over, just a small part of it, because we are enjoying our sin, we just do not want it to get out of control.

We could go to church, and say a few prayers, that should help right?

And so, many of us walk around aimlessly, thinking that a sin is small enough or manageable enough to hide, conceal or control.

We don’t really want to stop, but we don’t want to pay the price for the sin either, so we add a little Jesus here and there.

Maybe we do want to stop, but we do not know how to stop… what we’re doing is not working, but what else can we do?…

I’ll tell you what we have to do…

We have to SMOTHER the sin with the blood of Christ.

If we just add a little Jesus here and a little Jesus there, the sin will pop back up! Just like the weeds in the mulch bed!

We need to plead the blood of Jesus into our lives.

What do I mean plead the blood?

Pleading the blood simply means applying the blood of Jesus to our circumstances.

Rev 12:11 They conquered him (the Devil)
by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.

How did they conquer the Devil? By adding a little Jesus to their sin and continuing to do it??? NO

They conquered him by the Blood! They plead the blood into their circumstances and they won in the end, because Jesus won on the cross once and for all! HE beat sin!!!

Remember this, eventually, your sin will find you out. (Num 32:24)

Jesus said that nothing that is covered will not be uncovered.

He said that people do not light a lamp and hide it under a basket, but we do that all the time.

We say we love Jesus, but we don’t do the right thing when we should.

This is not just your problem; it’s my problem and every Christian’s problem!

Rom 7:15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate.

If the apostle Paul had a hard time doing the right thing, then none of us are safe!

The reason why we sin is because as a Christian, we have two natures.

We have our Christian nature to do what is right, and to please God, and we have something called our flesh.

Our flesh is what wants to sin. The Bible talks allot about fleshly desires.

These are things that make us feel good in this body, but do us no good spiritually.

Desires of the flesh are things like sex before marriage, stealing, looking at something inappropriate (like a girl with not enough clothes on), and usually most things that give us instant gratification like drugs, alcohol in excess (or underage) ext.

Sex outside of marriage would have made me feel great in the flesh, but the Spirit wanted to wait until marriage, which we (crystal and I) did by the way!!!

Galations 5:24 says that those who are in Christ have crucified the flesh and its passions and desires.

What does it mean to crucify?

It means to KILL IT!!!

We can’t just add a little Jesus to our sin, we have to plead the blood over our sin and kill the flesh!

Galations 5:24 could say, “those who are in Christ Jesus have KILLED the fleshly desires!”

Don’t just add a little mulch (Jesus); cover your sin with it completely!

If you don’t it will come back, and it will probably be worse than it was.

God bless,
Dan Fogarty.
